Wellington. A woman has died in a suspected shark attack in New Zealand. The victim was initially rescued alive from the water on Thursday, but died a short time later despite resuscitation attempts by the rescue forces, reported the newspaper “New Zealand Herald” with reference to the authorities.
The accident occurred at the popular Waihi Beach on the North Island. Around which kind of the predatory fish it concerned, was unclear at first. However, young great white sharks had recently been spotted in the region, said expert Riley Elliott. Shark attacks are extremely rare in New Zealand. Between 1852 and 2013, only twelve fatal attacks were recorded.
